Laundromat etiquette: 7 things regulars wish first-timers knew
Unspoken rules of laundromats. Mostly obvious, occasionally not. A short, friendly guide so you fit right in on visit one.
Most laundromat etiquette is just basic respect — but a few things are specific to how the room actually works. Here are the seven that make the biggest difference.
1. Set a timer for your machines
The biggest unwritten rule. Be back at your washer when it finishes. Other people are waiting.
If you can’t be back in time, that’s fine — just don’t expect your laundry to still be in the washer when you return. Someone will move it onto a folding table to free up the machine. That’s standard, not rude.
The fix: download the FasCard app and let it ping you. Now you can leave and come back exactly when needed.
2. Don’t grab someone else’s machine if it’s running
Even if there’s no one in sight, if a machine is mid-cycle, that’s someone’s. They’ll be back. Find a different one.
If a cycle has clearly finished and the laundry is sitting in there 5+ minutes after the machine stopped — totally fair to gently move it onto a folding table so you can use the washer.
Standard move when you do this: lift the wet clothes carefully into a clean spot on the folding table. Don’t drop them on the floor.
3. Don’t overload the machine
Tempting if you’re trying to do a big haul in one trip. Bad for your clothes, bad for the machine, and the wash won’t actually get clean because there’s no room for water and detergent to circulate.
Rule of thumb: clothes should fall to the bottom half of the drum when you load them. If they’re packed up to the door seal, switch to a bigger washer.
4. Don’t park your stuff at multiple folding tables
Plenty of folding space here, but use one table while you fold. Don’t spread out across three to sort and fold at the same time when other people are waiting.
If you really do need to sort across tables (large family load), do it quickly and let people work around you.
5. Clean up the lint
Every dryer has a lint screen on the inside of the door. Pull it out, peel off the lint, drop the lint in the trash before starting the dryer. Takes 5 seconds.
A clogged lint screen makes the dryer take 50% longer and is the leading cause of dryer fires. Both bad. Always clean it.
6. Don’t leave detergent or fabric softener spills
If you spill liquid detergent or fabric softener on the floor (it happens — bottles drip), grab a paper towel from the dispenser and wipe it up. If you spilled a lot, mention it to the attendant or send a quick note via the report-issue page.
It’s a slipping hazard. Other people will appreciate it.
7. Phone calls and music — earbuds, please
Laundromats are quiet most of the time. People are reading, working, or just zoning out. If you take a phone call or want to listen to something, use earbuds. Same as you would on a bus or plane.
A few more, quickly
- Don’t move someone’s laundry from the dryer until it’s been done at least 5 minutes.
- Don’t use the steel folding tables to put your dirty laundry bag on. Other people fold there.
- If something breaks, tell us. Don’t just walk away. Use the report-issue page or wave down whoever’s working.
- Strollers and carts are welcome — we’re a Brighton family neighborhood and we know.
- Tip jar at the kiosk: there isn’t one. We’d rather you put that money on a loyalty card and use it next time.
That’s the full list. Most people figure it out within 10 minutes of being here. Welcome to the spot.
